Stump Removal
Complete the Job.
Remove the Stump.
A felled tree leaves behind a stump that takes decades to rot naturally, and causes problems in the meantime. We grind and remove stumps of all sizes, leaving your ground clear and ready to use.
Leaving a stump in the ground isn't just an eyesore. It's an ongoing problem. Stumps attract pests, harbour disease that can spread to healthy trees, and can regenerate with persistent shoots that are difficult to control.
We use professional stump grinding machinery to mechanically grind stumps down below ground level, typically 150–300mm, deep enough that turf or planting can establish over the top. The resulting wood chip can be left on site as mulch or removed.
Why Remove a Stump?
- Prevents regrowth: shoots from live stumps can be persistent and damaging
- Removes trip hazard and lawn-mowing obstacle
- Eliminates habitat for wood-boring pests and fungal disease
- Frees up usable space, for planting, paving, lawn, or building
- Required for replanting: new trees establish better without a competing root mass
- Tidies the garden after felling: completes the job properly
What the Process Involves
Our grinder is manoeuvred over the stump and the cutting wheel reduces the stump and surface roots to chips. The depth of grinding is agreed in advance based on your plans for the ground. Shallow grinding is sufficient for turf cover, deeper grinding is needed ahead of hard landscaping or replanting.
We can also excavate and remove the entire root ball if required, though this is more disruptive and usually only necessary for large stumps close to buildings or hard surfaces.
“We always recommend grinding stumps at the same time as felling. It's more efficient, and leaves the client with a finished job rather than an eyesore they have to deal with later.”

Do you remove tree stumps?
Yes. We grind stumps of all sizes, usually 150–300mm below ground depending on what you plan to do with the space, and our grinder fits restricted gardens. It can be done at the same time as felling or separately, and the chippings can be left as mulch or taken away. Stump removal
Can you work in difficult access situations?
Yes. We work in small gardens, next to buildings and over roads, using aerial climbing, cranes and grabs where a straight fell isn't possible. We've worked in some of London's most constrained sites, including beside the Gherkin. The Gherkin case study
How long will the job take?
A crown reduction on a medium-sized tree may take a few hours; bigger or more complex jobs can run over several days. Your quote will include a clear timeframe.
