Tree Felling &
Milling Our
Own Timber

SustainabilityTimber MillingZero WasteUrban Timber

At some point all trees reach the end of their natural lives. Stricken by disease, structurally compromised or putting people at risk: when they do, they inevitably have to come down. What happens next is a choice.

We've always been determined that nothing goes to waste. Wood chip and biomass have their place, but for trees with good-quality timber, we wanted to go further. So we milled our first piece of timber, and we haven't looked back.

Urban Timber is Seriously Underrated

City trees might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of high-quality sustainable timber, but they should be. Growing slowly in urban environments, often on good soil, city trees can produce dense, characterful wood with incredible grain. The kind of material furniture makers dream about.

Rather than chipping perfectly good hardwood, we now mill selected felled trunks into planks: producing a valuable, genuinely sustainable local resource for furniture makers, craftspeople and clients who want something made from a tree with a real story behind it.

Our First Mill

Our first milling project was a team effort: a solid cooperative effort to take on the challenge under the careful eye of Jon, our resident jack of all trades and the member of our team who knows the milling process best. The results speak for themselves.

We're building this capability steadily. If you're a furniture maker, craftsperson or client interested in sourcing local urban timber, or if you'd like us to mill timber from a tree on your property, we'd love to hear from you.

“A tree that's stood for 80 years deserves better than the chipper. Milling our own timber feels like the right way to close the loop.”
